Assessment aspects of economic impact of genetically modified organisms on Lithuanian food sector and agriculture : Scientific study (in Lithuanian language) >>

The study focuses on economic consequences resulting from GMO use on agriculture and food sector in Lithuania. GMO is spread globally, however leading to various estimations of the fact. In their discussions on the use of GMO, in addition to economic benefits of biotechnologies to producers and the capability of increasing global food supply by means of GMO, scientists, politicians and the public emphasize threats emerging from GMO's uncontrolled spread and unexplored impact on human health. Liberalization of legal regulation of GMO use in the EU countries determines relevance of the assessment. EU legislation provides for increasing rights of state institutions to decide regarding broader use of GMO. Lithuanian authorities must make decisions in the light of various aspects of this issue, continuously follow up on GMO related processes and evaluate of economic consequences.

Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is often criticized for frequent inconsistencies of its goals with the challenges of agricultural and rural development and for it being distantly oriented towards implementation of the European Union (EU) strategy. Principles of the future CAP and its realization may be elaborated only if the outcome of comprehensive area survey is duly taken into account.

Lithuania's rural areas cover more than 97 % of countire’s territory and are home to 33 % of people. However, despite the EU and the Lithuanian resources allocated to rural and agricultural development, rural areas continue to decline. In order to manage this process, it is necessary to identify the processes that taking place and critically evaluate to take appropriate decisions on the future development of rural areas.

Statistical publications “FADN survey results” are annually published since 1996. The publication of 2010 is based on accountancy data of 2010 from 1300 family farms and 48 agricultural companies. Selected farms cover all districts, natural zones and reflect different farming conditions.

Grain and grain products, vegetable, fruit and berries, poultry, eggs  price tendencies, changes in thepotato, milk, meat and their products markets are analyzed. The Lithuanian data is compared with appropriate data of the other EU member states, short – term prognoses are presented.

Profitable agricultural activity provides a stable self-sufficiency with agricultural and food products. Positive structural production changes have been reached in the Lithuanian agrarian sector while implementing EU common agricultural policy measures. However, due to both external and internal factors influence differences, profitability of separate agricultural branches and products vary a lot and may have a negative impact on the rational agricultural production changes.

„Application of Perpetual Inventory Method (PIM) to Lithuania fishery sector capital valuation study“ is prepared according to the implemented project „Evaluation of the capital value, investments and capital costs in the fisheries sector” according to multiannual Community programme for the collection, management and use of data in the fisheries sector for the period 2009-2010 in Lithuania.

There is a large amount of abandoned land in Lithuania. This land is used neither as economic nor as agro environmental resource. This affects the country's agricultural development, hinders land resource management, undermine the country's image. Given the urgency of the problem the Government of Lithuania include this question into the Government Programme 2008–2012. Therefore, the scientific approach of the problem of abandoned land becomes more important.


Agriculture and food sector in Lithuania 2010 >>

During the period of economic recession agriculture and the food industry have remained as the most stable sectors of the Lithuanian economy. In these sectors nearly 8% of the whole economy’s GDP is created, nearly a tenth of the employed population has working places, the export makes 20% of the total Lithuania’s export.

The market changes of agricultural and food products are analyzed in the publication „Market Research“ No 1 (49). Influence of the reduction of expenditure for the production on the competitiveness of grain and rape farms, impact of the changes in the global dairy market on the Lithuanian dairy market, grain, potato, poultry price tendencies, changes in the meat and vegetable sectors are analyzed. The Lithuanian data is compared with appropriate data of the other EU member states, short – term prognoses are presented.
